Course Description:

This one-day face-to-face training course aims to provide health and social care staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver high-quality, person-centred care to individuals with learning disabilities and autism. This training is named in memory of Oliver McGowan, whose experiences highlighted the need for improved training in this area.

Pre-Requisites:

Training Tiers:

  • Tier 1 (General Awareness):
  • eLearning Module: 1 hour 30 minutes (free access)
  • Live Session: 1 hour
  • Suitable for those requiring general awareness of supporting autistic people or people with a learning disability.

Tier 2 (Direct Care and Support):

  • Suitable for those providing direct care and support for autistic people with a learning disability.

Participants should complete the tier relevant to their role. This training is suitable for all staff members involved in providing care and support for individuals with learning disabilities and autism.

Course Alignment:

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism Tier 2 aligns with the learning outcomes set out in the DHSC document "Right to be Heard" (2019) and the Core Capabilities Framework for Supporting People with a Learning Disability and Supporting Autistic People.

Please have your certificate from the Elearning module available during the training.

Course Content:

Morning Session: Learning Disability

  • Aim: Enhance understanding of learning disabilities and best practices in health and social care settings.

Objectives:

  • Understand unconscious biases and avoid diagnostic overshadowing.
  • Learn from Learning from Lives and Deaths Reviews (LeDeR).
  • Promote awareness of campaigns such as STOMP and STAMP.
  • Review The Equality Act 2010 and the importance of reasonable adjustments.
  • Comprehend the appropriate use of the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
  • Learn when to apply DNACPR.
  • Enhance communication with individuals with learning disabilities and their families.
  • Recognise the role of hospital passports and annual health checks.

Afternoon Session: Autism

Aim: Enhance understanding of autism and best practices in health and social care settings.

Objectives:

  • Understand why autism is described as an invisible condition.
  • Reflect on personal values and beliefs regarding autism.
  • Recognise the unique strengths and challenges faced by autistic individuals.
  • Identify potential triggers for anxiety in autistic individuals.
  • Identify reasonable adjustments and ways to adapt practices to support autistic individuals.
  • Familiarise with relevant legislation and resources to promote inclusive services.

Course Details:

  • Mode of Delivery: Face-to-Face Attendance Required
  • Course Length: 1 Day

This training is delivered through interactive and engaging face-to-face workshops, supported by experienced and accredited Oliver McGowan Trainers and co-trainers with lived experience.

Who Can Benefit:

This course is designed for all staff members involved in providing care and support for individuals with learning disabilities and autism. It will equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver person-centred care.

Unique Training Solutions is an accredited provider of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism Tier 1 and 2. Only trainers approved by Health Education England and holding a unique PIN can deliver this accredited programme.

Cancellation policy: In the event of you no longer being able to attend the workshop, we require 7 days notice in order to issue a refund. We can transfer your ticket to an alternative date if spaces are available and given at least 24 hours notice. If you are unwell on the day we can refund your ticket once you have rebooked onto an alternative session.
