About this Event

Older men’s mental health, emotional wellbeing and use of community support groups: a world café event exploring how we can better support older men’s mental health through community support groups

This a FREE workshop with lunch provided. The aim of this World Café event workshop is to bring together community members/ older men with service providers and stakeholders to explore ways in which older men use community support groups to manage mental health and emotional wellbeing, and to generate further discussion about what more could be done to support older men’s mental health and engagement in services.

Participants will:

1. Receive a brief overview of emerging findings from the project on Older Men’s Mental Health, Using Community Support Groups Project: a 1.5-year research project exploring older men’s (65+) experiences of using community support groups to manage their mental health and emotional wellbeing. Dr Alex Vickery completed over 20 interviews with older men across Bristol and Somerset, exploring their mental health experiences and uses of community support groups to support their mental health and everyday emotional wellbeing. The project was funded by the NIHR School for Social Care Research to May 2023.

2. Have an opportunity to explore and identify together current gaps in service provision in helping to support older men who may experiencing mental health struggles and emotional distress.

A World Café event is a flexible format for sharing knowledge in which small groups discuss a topic at different tables similar to a café. Discussion is initiated with a specific question related to the overall purpose of the event:

- What more can be done to support older men’s distinct mental wellbeing needs and how can we tailor appropriate services and referral support for older men experiencing mental health difficulties?

NB. If you are a man 65+ years of age, we can reimburse your travel expenses to this event.

Please contact Alex Vickery: [email protected] for further info.
