The Crawford Park District is excited to announce that Sears Woods State Nature Preserve has been officially inducted into the Old-Growth Forest Network! Join us for a special ceremony celebrating this honor. It will be followed by a naturalist-guided hike through the woods. The Old-Growth Forest Network is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection and recovery of our nation’s old-growth forests. They work to identify a national network of protected, publicly accessible forests for climate protection, species and ecosystem conservation, education, enjoyment, and inspiration across the United States. Check them out at www.oldgrowthforest.net - Sears Woods is now part of this growing network of hundreds of forests nationwide.
Located just southwest of Bucyrus, Ohio, Sears Woods spans 137 acres and features a 1.25-mile loop trail through towering beech, maple, oak, and hickory trees. The preserve was purchased in 1986 from the family of Paul B. Sears, a renowned Yale ecologist and conservationist born in Crawford County. It remains one of the best examples of mature forest in the region.
Old-growth forests like Sears Woods do more than inspire awe - they support human health. Studies show that time spent in nature can lower stress, reduce blood pressure, improve mood, and boost the immune system. Even short visits to forests have been linked to better mental clarity and emotional well-being. Put this forest on your list and discover why we think it’s special.
