About this Event
Middle and high school earth science and geology teachers: register for this 2-day teacher workshop with Ohio Natural Energy Institute!
Day 1 includes:
- Experience hands-on science activities you can use to engage students
- Dinner with industry professionals to learn about career pathways in the natural gas and oil production industry
Day 2 includes:
- A field trip to Collins Lab to learn about Ohio geology from industry professionals
- Free curriculum book and classroom supplies
As a result of taking part in this learning experience, you will:
- Know…how Ohio’s geologic history has shaped natural gas and oil formation.
- Understand…-the geologic processes that have formed the earth’s layers and fuel plate tectonics-how minerals form rocks and explain the difference between the three rock types-how nonrenewable geologic energy sources form
- Be able to…-explain how plate tectonics and continental drift have formed the earth’s surface-differentiate between the three main rock types and minerals-explain how Ohio’s sedimentary basin and geologic history produce natural gas and oil
Thanks to a generous grant from Southwestern Energy, you’ll also receive a gift card for attending.
Your students will love learning geology and earth science with STEM activities such as:
- Use puzzles, “edible models” and maps to understand Wegener’s Theory of Continental Drift, relative plate motion, and seafloor spreading
- Grow mineral crystals and test for hardness, specific gravity, and other properties
- Create a model to track carbon flow and experiment to find out if carbon is stored in rocks
- …and more!
These workshops and materials are provided free of charge to Ohio educators, thanks to Ohio’s natural gas and oil producers and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources!
