Marl, sometimes called greensand, is a major natural resource lying in many areas of South Jersey soils as a result of the ocean having covered much of the area in ancient times. In the 1800s it became a major source of potash, which together with its otherproperties, served as a major rejuvenator for depleted agricultural fields.
Jim Alexander will discuss how marl was discovered, mined, and used, as well as its contribution to the building of a railroad
network that brought development to many South Jersey areas. Samples of marl and photos of nearby early marl pits will be
presented. Thousands of tons remain untouched under our feet today, and have been the location of thousands of fossils and even dinosaur bones.
PRESENTER
Jim Alexander has been a Pathways presenter on subjects including railroad history, solid waste management, and local
military installations. His programs are also available for local presentation through the Medford Leas Pathways on the Road
program.
