OH, AUCTIONEER! is a one-of a kind theatre experience.
It's auction-as-performance art.
It's a meditation on the value of things.
It's a bunch of funny stories about auction school, wrapped in a real live auction.
It's a high-concept auction with live bidding and real winners.
It's a fundraiser for Megan's other new play, so she can take it on the road.
In a normal play, the actors perform and you watch them. But at this show, you participate. The whole thing ends differently if you're not there.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Every audience member gets assigned a bid number.
The auctioneer (Megan, obviously) will present items for sale.
The winning bid gets the item.
When the show's over, if you're the winner, you settle up and get your prize.
Y'know: an auction.
DO I HAVE TO BID?
No, of course not. Just like if you walk into Prairie Lights, you don't have to buy a single book. Or if you go to a carnival, you don't have to play a single game - not a shoot-to-win, not a whack-a-mole, nothing. You can just watch other people play.
On the other hand, you might find that you want to play. Even if you don't win, you might find the experience to be thrilling and fun. You may find yourself excited to bid.
That's why everybody gets a bid number. So they can play.
WHAT KIND OF STUFF WILL THERE BE FOR SALE?
That's where it gets interesting.
Let's say this is a unique auction. You've never been to an auction like this before in your life. It's like a meta-auction: an auction about auctions.
Some of the items are thought experiments.
Some are tangible, hold-in-your-hand stuff.
Some are services to be rendered.
Some are opportunities.
None of them can be found in any store.
WHAT'S THIS A FUNDRAISER FOR?
Megan has a new play called FAIR STATE. It's probably the best thing she's ever written. And she has these grand ambitions to tour it around the midwest, especially in small communities in the Iowa heartland.
The thing about these small communities, though: they don't have a lot of money.
But what if they didn't have to have money? What if Megan could just show up and do the show for them? She'd need gas money, and maybe a hotel, some marketing materials - y'know, she'd have to produce it.
What would it take to pull that off? It'd be pretty cool to attempt!
So that's what you're supporting: the worthy cause of taking art to rural and underserved communities, or, really, any community that will have her. The money raised will help offset the expense of the tour. Some places pay for art (we love those places!), but for the ones that don't, this fundraiser might help make possible what is otherwise impossible.
Not bad for an afternoon!

Items that qualify as services must be redeemed within twelve months of purchase.
Winners will settle with the auction staff before vacating the premises, or else forfeit their bid. Sellers reserve the right to re-sell items that have been forfeited.
