Denver’s Legendary 20th-Century Dance Party Returns!!!

On Friday, August 6, longtime Denver writer, musician, and DJ Jason Heller will bring backhis legendary dance party, OFF THE WALL, at the venue where it all started, THE HI-DIVE!!!

In 2003, the Hi-Dive opened at 7 South Broadway. As the club built its reputation as a live venue, Heller threw his epic dance party OFF THE WALL every Wednesday night, routinely drew 200+ paying patrons. Those who remember will regale you with tales of sweaty insanity, dancefloor debauchery, and a mad mix of the greatest songs of the 20th century!

Spinning all vinyl 45s—the nostalgic, retro-cool format that dominated the singles charts during the golden age of 20th-century popular music—Heller loves sharing the greatest dance jams of the 1950s through the 1990s. It’s the music he grew up on, played on the tiny little records of his youth. And it incorporates every genre you can think of: pop, rock, disco, hip-hop, punk, post-punk, R&B, new wave, grunge, country, funk, rockabilly, goth, glam, reggae, alternative, synth-pop, yacht rock, industrial, ska, swing, heavy metal, electronica, soul, British Invasion, Britpop, New Jack Swing, boy bands, girl bands, you name it. It’s all mashed up into a frenetic celebration of the greatest musical century of all time!

In addition to authoring Strange Stars: David Bowie, Pop Music, and the Decade Sci-Fi Exploded (a finalist for the Colorado Book Award), Heller has played in the well-loved Denver bands Crestfallen, The Blue Ontario, Red Cloud West, and Weathered Statues. As an employee at Wax Trax Records in the ‘90s and ‘00s, he helped shape the tastes of a generation of Denver music fans; as a writer for Westword, he’s chronicled the city’s culture for 20 years. He’s also a former or current resident DJ of the popular Denver dance parties Quid, Shag, Chit Chat, Whip It, Disco Ball, 45s Against 45, and Mile High Soul Club. As a DJ, he’s opened for everyone from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings to Fred Schneider of The B-52s. He’s also won numerous Westword: Best of Denver awards for his DJing over the past 25 years.
