On Jan. 7, Renee Good, an award-winning poet and Old Dominion University Creative Writing graduate, was shot and killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis. To honor Renee, ODU is hosting a Day of Music, Poetry, and Good Trouble from 1-9 pm on Sunday, Feb. 22. All are invited to attend. It begins with a Gathering and Prayer at 1 pm at ODU's Spirit Rock on the Green near the Webb Center. They will lay flowers, hold a silent prayer, and then read her award-winning poem, written while she attended the university. From 1:30-2 pm, a Procession will be held, marching from Spirit Rock to Elation Brewing. Signs and songs that mark Renee's contributions and resistance are encouraged. The music begins at 2 pm at Elation Brewing, 5104 Colling Ave. in Norfolk. Elation will host a Day of Music with the intention of raising funds for a scholarly award in Renee’s name. To honor her courage and sacrifice, this annual award will highlight an ODU student whose poetry follows in the tradition of peaceful protest and “good trouble.”
Donations, large and small, will be accepted. You can find Good’s 2020 Academy of American Poets Prize at Poets.org.
