Sam Philips, Senior Water Projects Engineer with Green Adelaide, Department for Environment and Water, will tell us about what's happening with Breakout Creek / Purruna Parri (‘River of Life’). This is the last three or so kilometres of River Torrens / Karrawirra Parri, an artificial channel dug in the 1930s to help manage flooding of the city and the western suburbs.
Over the last 30-odd years, local councils and other catchment managers have worked together to transform a weedy drain into a bustling ecosystem and an attractive community destination.
Sam Phillips is part of the team that worked on the latest stage of this transformation, between Tapleys Hill Road and Seaview Road.
Some 245,000 new native plants, covering over 80 different species, are thriving in this new habitat.
We'll learn about the new wetlands which help clean stormwater from the surrounding suburbs.
We'll see images of the amazing new sculptures by Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri artist Allan Sumner, which speak to the rich cultural heritage and strong living culture of local Aboriginal people.
Green Adelaide’s project manager for this latest stage of Breakout Creek’s transformation, has Sam Philips working closely with co-funding partners from City of Charles Sturt and City of West Torrens, construction project manager SA Water, the design team led by T.C.L, construction contractor Bardavcol, and a host of other contractors and stakeholders.
Sam was also project manager for the previous stage of work on Breakout Creek work in the late 2000s and early 2010s, with the former Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board.
As Green Adelaide’s project manager for Water Sensitive SA, he's been involved in creating stormwater recycling wetland projects around Adelaide; Oaklands Wetland, Adelaide Botanic Garden First Creek Wetland, and the Grange, Royal Adelaide and Glenelg Golf Club Wetlands.
