Summary
An introductory hour-long education session that offers an introduction to the realities and nuances of human trafficking in Alberta, participants will hear case studies of common trafficking stories through which they will learn about common risk factors, progressions, and typologies of human trafficking in Canada. Those in attendance are invited to interact by answering prompted questions to further their understanding.
Following the presentation, participants will know basic facts about human trafficking and be able to accurately recognize indicators and access expert resources when questioning whether to intervene.
OBJECTIVES
1. Increase awareness of human trafficking in Alberta.
2. Educate participants on types, indicators, vulnerabilities, and common experiences of human trafficking.
3. Provide participants with an appropriate call-to-action suitable to their skill level.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
• Participants know realistic facts about human trafficking.
• Participants understand how to accurately identify signs of human trafficking in their communities.
• Participants know how to safely respond to potential instances of human trafficking.
Michelle Kauenhofen is the Education Supervisor at ACT Alberta, the Action Coalition Against Human Trafficking. Michelle has a knack for connecting with and inspiring participants, helping them feel empowered to put into practice knowledge gained.
ACT's First Defense Program delivers tailored training to raise awareness and community response to interrupt the prevalence of human trafficking. Currently, ACT offers three programs
• Under prevention, we have First Defense, which is free tailored training and education for community response;
• They also run a Community-Based Victim Services Unit through our Pathways to Safety program, offering specialized case management to victims and survivors of human trafficking;
• And they build collective action through our It Takes a Village program, which focuses on knowledge sharing, research, and partnerships.
