"The ancient Egyptians used linen for clothing, sails, cord, and much more. Today it is fabled for its fine quality, and stars in mummy movies and the fanciful gowns of movie queens. But, despite its familiarity, it is often misunderstood and it is assumed that linen in the past was made as it was in early 20th century Europe. This talk will consider the manufacture of Egyptian linen, mainly centering on the period from 3000 to 100BC. Such a great time span, and so many debates about manufacture make this a very brief introduction and probably one which will concentrate on linen from field to thread."
