BORODIN In the steppes of Central Asia STRAVINSKY Pulcinella suite
SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony no 9 in E Flat Op 70
Conductor Mark Shanahan
Leader Sophie Cameron
We start the 2024 season with a powerful and dramatic programme. Borodin evokes the atmospheric calm of the steppes, where Russian and Asiatic musical themes combine; Stravinsky transforms music attributed to late-baroque composer Pergolesi, looking back at the Seventeenth Century through distinctly early Twentieth-century eyes; Shostakovich compresses remarkable variety into five brief movements, from humour and irony to lyricism and sorrow.
