Obviously Unthinkable #7 \u2013 Red Shift

How can we turn back time to illuminate the universe? The cry of absence contracts the void. Transparent shreds of night mingle with the living.
Redshift is an analog augmented reality performance. Using an optical process invented by artist and physicist Jean-Marc Chomaz, Redshift allows viewers to move through a space where three-dimensional shadows are abstracted from the surfaces on which they are formed.
It is as if a folding of the universe has mixed up the objects and their negative imprints. These voids within the volume of light, absent forms in suspense, move with the light source and with the viewer. Absence becomes dark energy, made tangible by the red shift it causes.
The performance created for the event will include a Time Reversal demo and a voyage to Time-Space Origin, where three pieces for cello and electronics by Séverine Ballon will turn into shadows : "Temps étendus", "Forêts intérieures", "Novembre 2020".
===========================================
Jean-Marc Chomaz is an artist-physicist, director of research at CNRS, professor at École polytechnique. He co-founded the Hydrodynamics Laboratory of CNRS-École polytechnique, the laboratory of excellence Systems and Engineering, La Diagonale of Paris Saclay University in 2012, and the Chaire Arts & Sciences in 2017. Alumnus of the École Normale Supérieure, he advises or has advised 31 PhDs, including 3 in art, and co-authored more than 250 publications. He received the CNRS Silver Medal 2007 and the Ampere Grand Prize of the Academy of Sciences 2012, was appointed “Fellow” of the American Physical Society in 2001 and of the Euromech in 2018
His research concerns the dynamics of soap films, theory of instability, vortex breakdown, geophysical and stratified fluids, biomechanics and art-science. His has created more than 30 art installations, presented worldwide.
Séverine Ballon is a composer and cellist: the two activities are linked in her musical research and feed off each other. In her work as a performer, she favours collaborations with composers, in the intimacy of the music-making process. She has premiered solos and concertos by Rebecca Saunders, Chaya Czernowin, Mauro Lanza, Philippe Leroux and Francesca Verunelli, among others. A resident of the Villa Médicis in 2023-2024, winner of SuperPhoniques 2024 and the Luc Ferrari competition in 2019, her recent projects include creations for La muse en Circuit, AuditivVokal Dresden and the Schallfeld ensemble.
Pierre Bourdon is a digital designer and prototypist specialized in 3D printing, mechatronic and computational design. He’s currently working at École Polytechnique with Jean-Marc Chomaz and Giancarlo Rizza, co-conceiving art-science installations for Chaire arts&science and Centre Spiral.
Curators Dmitry Gelfand & Evelina Domnitch have been working in tandem since 1998 creating multi-sensory installations and performances prodding the slippery origins of the physical world. The duo’s artworks have emerged through unorthodox collaborations with pioneering research groups, including LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory), Quantum Flagship, and Aerospace Engineering (TU Delft).
Obviously Unthinkable is presented by iii with financial support from Creative Industries Fund NL and The Municipality of The Hague.
