„Benin 1897“ heißt der „It’s Yours!“-Raum in der „Ausstellung RESIST! Die Kunst des Widerstands.“, in dem die nigerianische Künstlerin, Kunsthistorikerin und Aktivistin Peju Layiwola die Benin-Bronzen Sammlung des RJM thematisiert und sie erstmals in ihrer Gesamtheit öffentlich präsentiert. Genau hier wird Birgit Depenbrock, Restauratorin für Metall und Keramik am RJM ausgerüstet mit einem Mikroskop Einblick in ihre Arbeit geben und darüber sprechen, was es nicht nur praktisch, sondern auch ethisch bedeutet, Materialanalysen an diesen Hofkunstwerken vorzunehmen. Die Beschäftigung mit der Geschichte der Hofkunstwerke und insbesondere der Austausch mit Peju Layiwola zur ihrer eigentlichen Bedeutung und Funktion haben Birgit Depenbrock veranlasst, die Durchführung von Materialanalysen in der Restaurierung nochmals kritisch zu reflektieren. Ihre Perspektive zur Restaurierung werden auch Paule Dassi aus Kamerun und Yachilla Mustapha aus Nigeria einbringen, die in der vielseitigen Museumslandschaft Kameruns (Batoufam) und Nigerias (Kano) Ausstellungen kuratieren, Besucher*innen führen und Objekte restaurieren. Aktuell sind die beiden im RJM im Rahmen des MuseumsLab (Kooperationsprojekt u.a. vom Auswärtigen Amt und dem DAAD, www.themuseumslab.org), einem Programm zum Wissensaustausch für afrikanische und deutsche Museumskräfte, zu Gast. ---
"Benin 1897" is the name of the "It's Yours!" room in the "Exhibition RESIST! The Art of Resistance.", in which the Nigerian artist, art historian and activist Peju Layiwola thematises the RJM's Benin bronze collection and presents it publicly in its entirety for the first time. It is here that Birgit Depenbrock, conservator of metal and ceramics at the RJM, equipped with a microscope, will provide an insight into her work and talk about what it means not only practically but also ethically to carry out material analyses on these court artworks. The preoccupation with the history of the court artworks and especially the exchange with Peju Layiwola on their actual meaning and function have prompted Birgit Depenbrock to once again critically reflect on the performance of material analyses in restoration. Paule Dassi from Cameroon and Yachilla Mustapha from Nigeria, who curate exhibitions, guide visitors and restore objects in the diverse museum landscape of Cameroon (Batoufam) and Nigeria (Kano), will also contribute their perspective on restoration. The two are currently guests at the RJM as part of MuseumsLab (a cooperation project between the German Foreign Office and the DAAD, www.themuseumslab.org), a knowledge exchange programme for African and German museum staff.
