The Confucius Institute at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington will be hosting an interactive workshop at our early March meeting. This workshop explores encaustic cement tiles from Minnan (southern Fujian). Far from being simple copies of European designs, Minnan tiles have formed through cross-regional exchange and local use, evolving as different communities adapted and reinterpreted them. Using a cultural-computing lens we will trace how tile patterns travelled from Europe to Southeast Asia and into Minnan, and how they changed through selective adaptation and local creativity.
Participants will also create their own tile-pattern compositions in a simple hands-on workshop, including structural deconstruction, color selection, and your own reinterpretation.
