NYC Men Teach Hip Hop Cypher
Hosted by Nathaniel Smith, Director of NYC Men Teach at CUNY Queens College and co-sponsored by the Africana Studies Department, this year's event features special guests Sa-Roc, Dr. Todd Craig, Dr. Edmund Adjapong, and Vincent Deas, and will offer music, open mic, and a panel discussion in connection to the Queens College Black History Month theme: "African Americans & Labor: The Strength and Shape of Our Joys."
Sa-Roc is widely considered one of the greatest female MCs of all time and has a large high-caliber collaborative footprint with artists such as Black Thought, Common, Rapsody, Saul Williams, and many others. An artist with a conscious, Sa-Roc is a world-renowned speaker who engages youth and other audiences on Hip Hop entreprenuership, health & wellness, and social justice.
Dr. Edmund Adjapong is the Director of the Hip-Hop Culture, Equity, and Excellence Academy and Associate Professor of Educational Studies at Seton Hall University, co-founder of the nationally recognized Science Genius program, and author of the new book, Teach Like an MC: Hip-Hop Pedagogy for the K-12 Classroom.
Dr. Todd Craig is an Associate Professor of African American Studies at CUNY New York City College of Technology and CUNY Graduate Center, and author of the new book, “K for the Way”: DJ Rhetoric and Literacy for 21st Century Writing Studies.
Vincent Deas is the Lead Program Manager for NYC Men Teach at the Office Of Teacher Development at the NYC Public Schools, founder of the Cultural Curators Equity Consulting Company, and national conference presenter, speaker, and youth/community organizer.
Doors to the event at the Patio Room in the Dining Hall Building open at 5:30pm.
