Join us next Sunday for a special screening of "We Are All for the Fatherland (1979)", shown in a restored copy for the first time, at the NVIC Library! This screening is presented as part of our December tribute to Lebanese filmmaker Maroun Baghdadi (1950–1993), one of Lebanon’s most influential filmmakers.𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 | 𝟏𝟗𝟕𝟗 | 𝟖𝟎 𝐦𝐢𝐧 | 𝐀𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐜 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐬
Quiet, sharp, and darkly ironic, the documentary follows a group of children attempting to sing the national anthem as war rumbles around them. Between innocence and destruction, Baghdadi captures a nation still searching for itself- and for hope- in the war-torn South. The restored copy reveals footage of the landscape, of villagers working the land, of mass funerals, and interviews with farmers, fighters and mothers mourning their dead children. The music is composed by the legendary Lebanese musician Marcel Khalife and the film is produced by the lebanese national movement.
𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿'𝘀 𝗯𝗶𝗼: Maroun Baghdadi's work looks closely at everyday life during the civil war, capturing the fragmentation, tenderness and uncertainty of a country in transition. Beirut Ya Beirut was described by ArteEast as “perhaps the first real masterpiece of Lebanese cinema,” and Little Wars premiered in the 1982 Cannes Film Festival, introducing his work internationally. He later collaborated with Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese, and in 1991, his feature Out of Life (Hors la Vie) received the Cannes Jury Prize - affirming his place in the history of Arab cinema. Throughout his career, he directed eight feature films, thirteen documentaries, numerous shorts and video works: a life of filmmaking compressed into too few years.
/// Please note that our library has limited seats and we work on a first-come, first-served basis. The doors open at 6:30PM and the screening starts at 7:00 PM, or earlier in case the space reaches its full capacity. See you on Sunday!///
