In a windy Somali village, a newly formed family must navigate between their different aspirations and the complex world surrounding them. The film follows Mamargade, a single father striving to provide a better life for his son, while his sister Araweelo returns home seeking a fresh start after her divorce. Love, trust and resilience will power them through their life paths. The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, marking a historic moment as the first Somali film featured in the Official Selection.
Directors’ bio: Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, Mo Harawe is a Somali-Austrian writer and director. He studied visual communication and cinema at Kunsthochschule Kassel. His short films have received wide international recognition, including Life on the Horn (2022), which received a Special Mention at the Locarno International Film Festival, and Will My Parents Come to See Me (2022), which won the Grand Prix at Clermont-Ferrand and later received the Austrian Film Award for Best Short Film in 2023. The Village Next to Paradise is Harawe’s debut feature film. After premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, it has received wide international acclaim, including the Jury Prize at the 21st Marrakech International Film Festival.
