About this Event
Join Jubilate for a programme of sumptuous festive music for choir and audience. Works by Finzi and Vaughan Williams for soprano and baritone soloists and chorus sit alongside lesser-known gems by early twentieth-century composers including Elizabeth Maconchy, Gustav Holst and Avril Coleridge-Taylor, performed in the stunning setting of Keble College Chapel.
The evening is book-ended by two startlingly atmospheric Christmas ‘scenes’: Vaughan Williams’ beloved Fantasia on Christmas Carols and Gerald Finzi’s haunting In terra pax, in which the poetry of Robert Bridges is intertwined with Biblical passages narrating the birth of Jesus. Shorter works by Maconchy, Holst, and Coleridge-Taylor add vivid splashes of festive colour - alongside our favourite carols for audience!
One of Oxford's top chamber choirs, JUBILATE continues to carve out a distinctive niche in the city's crowded choral scene with imaginatively-programmed and powerfully executed concerts, directed by Helen Smee. In recent years the choir's repertoire has encompassed a wide range of music from renaissance polyphony to the contemporary, via Eastern Orthodox sacred works, forgotten nineteenth-century gems and more. With a continuing commitment to new music and accompanied by some of Oxford finest professional musicians, the choir celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2025.
