Who are Marelli?
The Marelli North East operations were all part of the former Calsonic Kansei organisation but each site has a unique history written as the Nissan (NMUK) factory has developed since it produced its first car in 1986.
- The Sunderland Plant in Pennywell started life as a Garage Door factory in 1970 but it was not until 1989 that it started producing Interior Plastic parts for Nissan under the ownership of a joint venture (MKL) between Marley Group and Kanto Seiki. Kanto Seiki was the former name of Kansei Corporation which later merged with Calsonic to form Calsonic Kansei. We can therefore trace our company’s involvement in this plant back to 1989. The Sunderland site was also formerly home to Kansei UK Ltd which manufactured Instrument Clusters (Combi-Meters) for NMUK.
- The Washington Plant at Bentall Business Park used to be a steel rolling mill (hence the great length of the building) but in 1986, TI Nihon UK was established to manufacture Exhaust Systems for NMUK. In Japan, the Nihon Radiator company changed its name to Calsonic Corporation in 1988 at which point our plant became known as Calsonic Exhaust Systems UK. Again, we can trace our company’s history in Washington right back to when it first opened and be proud that we are the only supplier of Exhaust Systems that NMUK has had in those nearly 40 years of production during which time we have supplied over 10.5 million systems. The Washington site is now also home to our Steering Member production facility and our Warehousing operations.
- On-site Operation was established inside NMUK in 2005 to manufacture Cockpit Modules (CPM) for the original Nissan Note and Qashqai. Since the start of production of those vehicles, Marelli have produced over 6m CPMs, delivering synchronously to both production lines.
The Sunderland Plant is now the regional centre of Marelli's Interior Experience Division and houses 28 Injection Mould Machines, Negative Vacuum Forming & Foaming lines, high-gloss paint facilities and assembly cells for Centre Consoles & Instrument Panels. It is also home to the Commercial and Project Management teams and Marelli's award-winning IFA group who develop and build automated assembly lines in-house.
So, join us in November to hear more from Marelli, maximise your membership and connect with like-minded businesses who make up the UK’s largest automotive cluster.
