Oil painter Margaret DowellMy work is a process of exploring the connections between the natural world and spirituality.
What is nature, after all, but a manifestation of the force of life which is in everything. To me,
plants express this more than anything. They sustain us as food, medicine and even the very
oxygen we breathe. Realizing the interconnection of all life is true spirituality; and it is this that I
try to express in my work.
I have used a variety of media to create my work but now focus on watercolor coated with
encaustic medium to create paintings of native plants of Appalachia, especially spring
ephemerals. It’s always been the process of making art that was important to me and exploring
different media provides challenge and excitement.
Over the years, the subject of my work was travel and pilgrimage. Although I’ve traveled widely
and recorded the plants I encountered in my pilgrimage series, during Covid I decided to do a
“pilgrimage at home.” My Appalachian Pilgrimage is still in progress
