The Pillowcase Program is an International Red Cross program designed in consultation with educators as a safe and interactive emergency preparedness workshop for children in Primary School years 3 and 4 (roughly ages 8-11). The one hour session generally follows this path:

- Deep breathing to settle the mind (breathing activity using their favourite and least favourite colours, or the five finger breathing method)
- Short animated cartoon about why it’s important to be prepared (fun cartoon, kids really seem to tune in to it)
What’s important to pack? A card sorting and discussion game (kids split into small groups and prioritise a set of picture cards e.g a teddy bear, a pushbike, a dog, a TV, photo album etc.)
- Pillowcase – We introduce a pillowcase as an easy way for kids to learn that they only to pack and carry what is necessary. We then give the kids time to rethink their card choices e.g bikes don’t fit!
- What’s in, what’s out, and why? The groups get to tell us why they reprioritised their order, and then we ask them to decide what further two things could they still safely leave out, and why?
Colouring Time – Kids use our magic fabric markers to write the names of their chosen items and draw pictures on their pillowcases to remind them of what to pack when preparing for an emergency.
- Questions and Answers. They get to keep the pillowcase plus we give them a ‘Get Ready Kids’ colouring book, and ironing instruction for parents/carers to ‘iron in’ the magic ink so it doesn't wash out.
Please message us if your child aged 8-11 would like to take part in this workshop.
