Unlocking Smiles: Exploring Maxillary Expansion Techniques
Shivam Mehta, BDS, MDS, MDENTSC
Different types of expanders are used to correct maxillary transverse deficiency. This lecture will discuss the different types of expanders and their applications. The lecture will discuss the long-term effects of maxillary expansion specifically mini-screw assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) in detail. This presentation will answer the following questions: What are the effects of conventional rapid palatal expansion (RPE) and mini-screw assisted rapid palatal expansion in the long-term? Do RPE and MARPE affect the dental, skeletal, soft-tissue structures and airway in a different manner with respect to controls? This lecture would describe a cutting-edge technique of voxel-based superimposition of serial CBCT scans to analyze the changes with conventional and mini-screw assisted rapid palatal expansion as compared to controls. Furthermore, the short-term and long-term outcomes following expansion appliances would be described using color coded maps.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Investigate the long-term outcomes with RPE, MARPE and controls and recognize the biomechanical and biological rationale for the outcomes
- Become familiar with clinical tips, pearls and techniques and avoid the common pitfalls for insertion of MARPE appliances
- Learn how to design the MARPE appliances according to the clinical need such as (i) two mini-screws vs four mini-screw design; (ii) mini-screw first approach versus appliance first approach and (iii) bone-anchored MARPE versus hybrid MARPE
