The Ethan Allen Homestead Museum presents our Free Monthly Lecture this November: "How Vermont Became Iconic: From Backwater to Wonderland" by Dr. Douglas Slaybaugh, professor of history emeritus at Saint Michael’s College.

ABOUT THIS MONTH'S LECTURE:
Professor Doug Slaybaugh will discuss how Vermont transformed itself from a poor, insular, traditional society centered on farming, logging, and mining into a richer, better educated one centered on the environment, tourism, and high tech, in the process creating an appealing new image. To explain this transformation, he will examine the revolution in transportation, especially the development of the Interstate Highways and the Burlington Airport, as well as the displacement of traditional industries and their manual labor with high-tech ones like IBM and IDX and their more educated workforce.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Doug Slaybaugh is a professor of history emeritus at Saint Michael’s College where he taught U.S. history for 32 years. His favorite courses were on the history of Presidential Elections and on the evolution of the American Dream. He has also taught at Cornell, Texas Tech, Ithaca College, SUNY Cortland, and Wells College. He holds a B.S. and M.A. from Iowa State, and a Ph.D. from Cornell, all in history. He is the author of William I. Myers and the Modernization of American Agriculture and articles on social work in the Progressive Era, federal farm policy in the Great Depression, Adlai Stevenson’s presidential campaigns in the 1950s, and the closing of the Winooski woolen mills.
