The November 17, 2025, speaker meeting of the Silver Spring Garden Club features a talk entitled, “Invasive Species: Friend or Foe?”This lecture will feature a brief history of invasive species particularly in the Mid-Atlantic area. Our speaker John Peter Thompson will provide some answers for what is invasive and what is native which can be difficult to define and implement. The areas around all our dwellings wherever located are not natural, but in reality compromises of all sorts that need to be managed by us. He will also talk about desirable natives and non-natives around the home and garden suitable for this area.
In addition to his family founding Behnke Nurseries in Beltsville in 1930, and more recently a sustainability consultant, John Peter Thompson has studied invasive species for many years. He was a founding member and officer of the Maryland Invasive Species Council, the Mid-Atlantic Invasive Plant Council, and the National Invasive Species Advisory Committee. He has contributed to and authored many publications on the subject and lectured about the same across the country.
