Stories as Systems: Building Community Visibility Online

Featured Speaker:

Courtney McGill is a community archivist based in Brunswick, Georgia. She is dedicated to collecting cultural stories, traditions, and the narratives of local business owners, while also curating events that give authors and storytellers space to share their work. As the founder of Black-Owned Brunswick, she has built a platform that celebrates and amplifies the stories of Black businesses, creatives, and cultural leaders across the Golden Isles. Drawing from more than a decade of experience in local government, education, and public outreach, Courtney brings a unique perspective to the ways media and information systems can shape visibility, access, and opportunity.

Growing up on Sapelo Island, Courtney witnessed firsthand the power of community and the fragility of cultural memory. Her work—from launching the Griot’s Garden podcast on Gullah

Geechee ethnobotany to creating content and programming virtual and in-person events with other local storytellers—honors that legacy while innovating for the future. With a background in sociology and anthropology, she weaves history, culture, and community memory into her projects, bridging gaps between businesses and the audiences who want to support them.

At her core, Courtney is passionate about building systems of connection—whether through blogging, event curation, podcasting, or cultural archiving—that ensure Black stories and businesses remain visible and celebrated.
