The November 2024 members meeting of the Glendale Arizona Historical Society will be held on Monday November 25, 2024 at Manistee Ranch beginning at 7:00 pm.Author Debbie Probst Gipson will present an immersive experience based on her book entitled Stories the Canyon Keeps: A “Grand” Family Legacy, which was chosen “Best of the West 2019” by True West Magazine.
Into the strangely stark, yet beautiful landscape of The Grand Canyon, into the rough and wild currents of history walked William Wallace Bass. In 1883, W.W. Bass, a young man from another world took a calculated risk, establishing a camp on the edge of the Great Abyss. He determined that people globally, would make their way to his rim-side camp to gawk at Mother Nature’s most resplendent gift to man. Through his years at the Canyon, Bass would cater to and become friends with the likes of Zane Grey, John Muir, Thomas Moran and Captain Jack Crawford, the Poet Scout. In 1893, Ada Diefendorf, a pianist and teacher traveled from New York to Prescott in the Arizona Territory in search of adventure. She would meet and make the fateful decision to marry W.W. and spend a life fraught with hard work, angst and tragedy surrounded by the grandeur of the Grand Canyon.
Debbie Probst Gipson was born and raised in Holbrook AZ and her roots run deep into the arid soil of the Colorado Plateau, which instilled an abiding respect for, and interest in the history of Arizona and the people that helped to shape the Southwest. She is a watercolorist, floral designer, business owner, author and third generation Arizonan. W.W. and Ada Bass were the great-grandparents of Ms. Probst Gipson's husband.
Refreshments will be served after the meeting and are generously provided by Homage Coffee House.
Please enter Manistee Ranch off of 51st Avenue and park in the parking lot or go through the vehicle gate and park near the house. Members are welcome to bring a guest. Non~members are also welcome to attend and learn about GAHS and historic Manistee Ranch.
