The St. Andrew the Apostle Concert Series welcomes the father-son organ/violin duo of Charles Tompkins and Gregory Tompkins in a free concert on Sunday November 24 at 4 PM in Clifton Virginia.
About the Artists
Dr. Charles Tompkins is Distinguished University Organist and Professor of Music Emeritus at Furman University in Greenville South Carolina. Recognized as one of America’s premier organ teachers and concert organists Tompkins holds bachelor’s master’s and doctoral degrees from the Eastman School of Music and the University of Michigan. He performs each year at universities and major churches across the United States and Europe having played at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris the Kennedy Center the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC and the Spoleto Music Festival in Charleston. An active church musician throughout his career Tompkins has been the organist of Greenville's historic First Baptist Church since 1997.
Gregory Tompkins holds a B.M. in violin performance from the Eastman School of Music and recently received his master’s degree from the New England Conservatory. He has participated in a variety of summer festivals across the United States including the Music Academy of the West Spoleto Festival USA the Castleman Quartet Program and the National Repertory Orchestra. Gregory concertizes regularly in solo and chamber recitals across the eastern United States and has performed as a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.
Concert Details
The concert will feature organ works of J.S. Bach and Florence Price (gifted early 20th-century African-American composer) and John Cook’s “Fanfare” which will showcase the brilliant trompette en chamade of the St. Andrew Peragallo pipe organ. Also on the program are organ/violin works by Jehan Alain and Naji Hakim and the brilliant Rosary Concerto No. 16 of Heinrich Biber associated with the feast of the Guardian Angels. After the concert stay for a complimentary post-concert reception with light refreshments where you can mingle with friends and meet the artists.
