Who: Everyone. No experience necessary but you must be able to get onto the floor.
A whole afternoon focussing on somatic yoga and mindful movements to help rebalance and restore the nervous and endocrine systems and help re-wire your brain.
The mind-body connection is a powerful channel through which somatic practices can promote an improved sense of emotional well-being. Tension and stress may be affecting the way you move or think and somatic movements can help shift that. They are gentle, mindful and fluid exercises that help release stored tension and trauma in your body, which professional therapists believe is stored in the nervous system. With practice, it can help you to cope with stress, anxiety and fatigue, yet help build resilience, assist healing, brings relief and improves flexibility and sleep.
Mind-body exercises in somatic practice are all about cultivating the internal experience and throughout the class you will be encouraged to listen and pay close attention to the sensations
of how your body feels when moving, and not worry about how good you look in a pose, what fancy leggings people are wearing or whether you’re burning calories! The goal is not just to perform the exercise, but focus on how its feels physically, emotionally and mentally, and sense and observe the body's response, building a deep mind-body connection.
With time and practice, the specific movements can help to regulate your nervous system and help shift stored tension in your body, which, in turn, can help soothe not only your mental thoughts but your physical symptoms too, altering the neurobiology in your body by lowering the stress hormones and reducing high blood pressure, improve gut issues as well as helping to boost the immune system. The list goes on!
The benefits are letting go of emotional baggage, feeling less tense, lighter, feeling calmer more often, feeling less jumpy/twitchy/always on alert, so you're not stuck in ‘fight or flight’. Over time you build a connection to your heart, your guts, your instincts, your intuition, your insights.
Some of my clients have described previous somatic workshops as “like magic”, “it’s like a miracle” and “the effects of the class lasted for days”, “I was full of beans the next day”, “I was sceptical at first, but now I am better at managing my pain” and “I felt calmer, more accepting of myself”.
I have been teaching, practising and studying somatic movement for more than 20 years. Since then it has become an essential part of my life and I include parts in my yoga teaching.
This 3-hour workshop will just be those movements (no weights, no bands, no ‘exercises’). We will have more time to explore deeper and further and I can help show you simple, no-nonsense, and scientifically based ways to help you release and recharge your mind and body.
The class will be in English. I can speak some Welsh, but not to the level required to teach this specialist class. However, I'm happy to converse in Welsh.
