Your instructor, Danny Blumenfeld, will provide you with a wheel thrown, leather hard brown stoneware mug that has been coated with a white slip. You will paint the mug with whatever design you choose. Afterwards you may carve the mug (sgraffito) to create a one-of-a-kind mug.
Each mug provided will be between 5 and 6 inches tall. You may bring a design printed on standard printer paper which can be transferred onto the surface of the mug.
Warning: Do not make the design too complicated. To get an opaque effect as seen in the images above it requires 3 coats of each color. Less will look more like water colors and will show brush strokes. Overlapping the colors will also change the results.
After completing the workshop each piece will be fired two times. After the first firing (bisque) which dries and hardens the clay, Danny will glaze the interior with a blue glaze and the exterior with a clear glaze creating a piece of pottery that is non-fading and oven and microwave safe.
The cost of the workshop includes 3 hours of studio time and all of the tools and supplies needed.
Final products should be available about 2 weeks after the workshop.
IMPORTANT: Class is open to ages 16 and up.
Please wear appropriate clothing for getting dirty.
Pottery pieces not picked after 30 days will be discarded.
Class may be canceled due to low enrollment in which case a full refund will be issued.
