About the film:
Northened is a coming-of-age story and love letter to Hamilton, Ontario. It follows two friends, Sam and Franklin, spending a muggy, endless summer in the city’s industrial northeast end. Their neighbourhood, which encompasses the polluted shores of Lake Ontario and the declining steel plants surrounding it, exists in the space between hostile and hospitable. One day, while passing the time loitering and committing small acts of mischief, the two friends experience something strange at the beach, threatening to disrupt their sense of reality forever. Is it a hallucination brought on by exposure to environmental pollutants? Is it real, or is it something they’ve dreamt up to cope with the boredom of their cyclical days?
Northened explores the landscapes of a dying rust-belt city through a lens of childlike ennui and imagination. Blending magical realism with slice-of-life vignettes, the film offers a look at a part of Hamilton that is quickly vanishing behind the curtains of urban renewal and gentrification.
