North Bay Film presents: HARD TRUTHS 🎥Join us at the Capitol Centre on Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, at 7:30 PM for a one-night-only screening of HARD TRUTHS, the latest film from legendary British filmmaker Mike Leigh.
A seven-time Oscar nominee and master of character-driven storytelling, Leigh reunites with Secrets & Lies star Marianne Jean-Baptiste for this fierce, compassionate, and darkly humorous exploration of family and the thorny ties that bind us.
Pansy (Jean-Baptiste) is a woman wracked by fear, tormented by afflictions, and prone to raging tirades against her husband (David Webber), her son (Tuwaine Barrett), and anyone who looks her way. Meanwhile, her easygoing younger sister Chantal (Michele Austin) is a single mother whose life is as different from Pansy’s as their clashing temperaments—brimming with communal warmth from her salon clients and daughters alike. As the film peels back the layers of their lives, Hard Truths delivers a deeply resonant study of kinship, duty, and the complexities of love in the face of hurt and hardship.
Known for his unique filmmaking process, Mike Leigh crafts his films through extensive improvisation with actors, leading to deeply realistic and emotionally authentic narratives. His previous works, including Secrets & Lies (Palme d’Or winner), Vera Drake, and Happy-Go-Lucky, have cemented his reputation as one of Britain’s greatest directors. With Hard Truths, Leigh once again proves why he is a master dramatist, delivering a film that is as bracing as it is tender.

“With a heartbreaking lead performance from Jean-Baptiste at its center, Leigh has crafted one of the most sincere slice-of-life films to come out of British cinema in recent years.”
- Nadira Begum, Paste Magazine
“Ultimately, the truths of Hard Truths are as simple and poignant as they are difficult to initially discern. An unmistakable certainty, though, is that this reunion of Leigh and Jean-Baptiste was too long in the making—and should be repeated once again post haste”
- Nick Schager, The Daily Beast
“In Mike Leigh’s lacerating new film, Marianne Jean-Baptiste delivers a hall-of-fame acting triumph as a London housewife and mother who’s mad at the world and ready to give us all a tongue-lashing. She’s an emotional powderkeg ready to blow. Better duck”
- Peter Travers, ABC News
