Nomad Theatre Company, in partnership with the Mclean County Museum of History, is excited to present Order in the Court, a series of 10-minute plays performed in the historic Governor Fifer Courtroom directed by Lori Adams. This bold, bite-sized collection of courtroom plays are anything but by the book. From dystopian futures to historic uprisings, from quiet moral reckonings to laugh-out-loud absurdity, these winning plays explore justice, power, identity, and resistance with unique creativity and plenty of twists, heart, and humor along the way. Anchored with a nod to McLean County’s own history, Order in the Court is an immersive experience that invites you right into the heart of the courtroom.

Featured plays:
Disorder in the Court by MC Crosby
Order, order in the court! Well, I guess there can’t be when there are zombies, I mean kurus roaming around outside. Xan has rescued his boss, attorney Babs, and brought them to the local courthouse to seek shelter from the undead taking over Bloomington. As they try to plan their escape, and determine whether or not they actually can escape, they realize that maybe you can only live if you have something to live for.
Drag/Bar by Domenick Scudera
Aidy Aitchdee, a sassy drag queen, is grilled by a lawyer in a courtroom. She is being charged with obscene, inappropriate behavior for reading to children at a public library as part of a Drag Story Time event. Tables are turned when Aidy informs the lawyer that they are both characters in a play and that she can flip the script in order to make the story more empowering and inclusive.
End of Life by Vincent Kovar
Far in the future, Albert Forsyth Tusk must defend not only his own existence but the lives of 400,000 other uploaded consciousnesses living in a power-hungry metaverse. When an AI tribunal threatens to shut down humanity's last digital refuge to conserve resources, Tusk faces a moral reckoning that forces him to confront his past failures while arguing for the sacred right of consciousness to exist.
Inquest by Bruce Boeck
Sally and Simon--who are vaguely familiar--are asked to explain Sally's grandmother's death, which is rather straightforward--or is it?
Judge Sparks by Mathew Green
During a sleepless night, a judge is troubled by the persistence of memory and the limits of his powers.
Normal Traffic by Phil Darg
A determined man (who received a citation for “driving too slowly”) disputes his alleged moving violation in court.
The Indignant Ladies of Towanda by John D. Poling
It is anything but “bottoms up” in this incredibly true account of the 1858 trial of the indignant ladies of Towanda who zealously destroyed all the liquor in the town’s Buena Vista Saloon. Predating temperance movement icon Carrie Nation and her “hatchetations” by four decades, some sixty ladies of Towanda risked reputation, safety, and even imprisonment to destroy the social ill they believed was infecting their community. This play tells their story with humor and heart.
Zero Bond by Lavinia Roberts
Justine, a prosecutor, asks for zero bond for a defendant, who has a “high statistical” likelihood of being dangerous.
