Note: Special start time.
Turner Classic Movie host and Film Noir Foundation President Eddie Muller returns with a selection of crime classics, half in rare 35mm film prints, with a focus on women related to his book Dark City Dames.
Sunday 1pm
The Set-Up (1949) RKO Radio Pictures. 72 minutes. 35mm.
Ignoring the pleas of his wife (Audrey Totter) veteran boxer Stoker Thompson (Robert Ryan) agrees to one last bout, unaware his manager has made a deal with a local gangster for him to take a dive. Presented in “real time”—the 72 minutes before, during, and after Thompson’s last stand—The Set-Up was the favorite film of star Ryan, who proudly displayed the prowess that made him a collegiate heavyweight champ on the Dartmouth boxing team. Former Oakland Tribune sportswriter Art Cohn brought a wealth of real-world experience to the script, which he developed in collaboration with director Robert Wise.
99 River Street (1953). United Artists. 83 minutes. Digital.
Ernie Driscoll (John Payne) once had a shot at the heavyweight crown, but now he drives a cab and can barely hold on to his hot-to-trot wife (Peggie Castle). When she gets thick with a gang of thieves, it’s Ernie who ends up on the hot seat. A flighty actress craving her big break on Broadway (Evelyn Keyes) is Ernie’s only ally, using all her wiles to bust him free of a deadly frame-up. Very few films captured as well as 99 River Street the pulpy delights of 1950s paperback crime fiction, making this perhaps the signature film of slam-bang director Phil Karlson. Amid the gaggle of tough guys, Keyes and Castle radiate almost cartoonishly sexy charisma. A “one long night” thriller that delivers nail-biting suspense start to finish.
