About this Event
The Consulate General of Switzerland in New York presents a conversation between Prix Meret Oppenheim recipients Claudia & Julia Müller, Carine Bachmann, Director of the Swiss Federal Office of Culture and Nina Zimmer, co-curator of Meret Oppenheim: My Exhibition with an introduction by Stefanie Hessler, Director of Swiss Institute.
On the occasion of the first transatlantic retrospective of Swiss artist Meret Oppenheim, currently on view at MoMA - organized in collaboration with the Kunstmuseum Bern and the Menil Collection - Swiss artists Claudia & Julia Müller engage in a conversation with Carine Bachmann, Director of the Swiss Federal Office of Culture and Nina Zimmer, co-curator of Meret Oppenheim: My Exhibition and Director of the Kunstmuseum Bern and Zentrum Paul Klee. The sisters Claudia & Julia Müller have been collaborating since 1992 and are renowned for their complex wall drawings, installations, works on paper, ceramics and videos. In their practice, they explore opposite and contradictory imageries, which they combine to create fantastic pictorial worlds. Their works often deal with human relationships and power structures. A signature quality of these two artists is the ease with which they meld various visual elements and techniques, reminiscent of Meret Oppenheim. Claudia & Julia Müller received numerous awards including the Prix Meret Oppenheim, Switzerland’s most prestigious art prize. The talk will explore Claudia & Julia Müller’s practice, Meret Oppenheim’s influence on their work and Oppenheim's continued relevance in contemporary art.
