For half a decade, Basel Adra, a Palestinian activist, films his community of Masafer Yatta, in the West Bank, being destroyed by Israel's occupation. While filmed prior to October 7, homes in Masafer Yatta continue to be bulldozed and the community ethnically cleansed. Just this week, Hamdan Ballal, one of the co-directors, was attacked by settlers and arrested by the Israeli military.Fresh off its Oscar win for Best Documentary Feature, this critically acclaimed film has sparked important conversations. The film is not endorsed by the Palestinian led Boycott-Divest-Sanction movement as it was seen that the Palestinian-Israeli co-direction normalized relations with the oppressors. This was especially after the Israeli co-director's Oscar acceptance speech that centred on "both-siding" the "conflict".
The film will be followed by a panel discussion to allow time and space for community reflection and dialogue. The panel will feature local community members that have been to the West Bank, a local indigenous perspective, and most importantly, a Palestinian perspective.
This film is not yet rated in Canada. It is rated MA15+ in Australia, meaning it is restricted to those 15 years and older due to mature themes, violence, and coarse language.
This screening is made possible by the generous support of Overlander Sports and private donors. All proceeds to go to the Yellowknife Well of Hope, a water well project in Northern Gaza.
