This is an all-day workshop led by tutor: Mark Welch.There are 36 species of mosquito in Great Britain, comprising two sub-families and six genera. One-third of the species are uncommon or rare. This workshop will focus on gaining basic identification skills for distinguishing genera in the field/lab that will enable people to take things further and make valuable contributions to our knowledge of the distribution and ecology of the British fauna.
Aims of the workshop:-
1) Attendees should be able to recognize to genus adult members of the genera Anopheles, Culex, Culiseta and Ochlerotatus using a x8 or x10 hand lens.
2) Attendees should be able to recognize to genus larvae of Anopheles, Culex, Culiseta and Aedes using a hand lens.
3) Attendees will learn how to identify a few of the common mosquito species.
4) Attendees will learn how to collect adult and immature specimens.
5) Instruction will be given on how to rear mosquitoes, with the aim of aiding identification.
6) Attendees should leave with an introductory knowledge of the anatomy, biology, ecology, taxonomy and significance of British mosquitoes.
A selection of carded specimens and slide-mounted genitalia will be available for study. Larvae preserved in alcohol will be examined microscopically. Where possible, live adults
and larvae will also be examined. Stereomicroscopes and identification guides will be provided. Attendees should bring a x8 or x10 hand-lens with them.
