This is an all-day workshop, led by tutors Tim Hodge & Mark WelchAs decomposers, pollinators, bio-controllers and habitat indicators, flies are fundamental to ecosystem health and the provision of “ecoservices”. There are around 100 different fly
families in Great Britain. This workshop will introduce the important morphological features that allow the recognition of members of some of the more frequently encountered families
such as Tipulidae, Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, Tachinidae, Sciomyzidae and Conopidae.
Examples of how to recognise important genera within some of these families will also be given. The use of pinned or carded specimens will be the basis for instruction. Identification keys will be provided. No previous knowledge of Diptera is needed but familiarity with using a hand-lens and a stereomicroscope is desirable although not essential.
There is a cost of £15 for the day and numbers are limited to 8 participants. To book a place please email Mark Welch via [email protected]
