Introduction to Disaster and Trauma Counseling: Basic Training for Disaster Response Crisis Counselors - 6 hours
“Introduction to Disaster and Trauma Counseling for mental health responders who may be called upon to provide early psychological intervention in the wake of a disaster or terrorist attack. The program addresses the critical knowledge areas and skill sets that will allow the mental health responder to work with the public health system, law enforcement and emergency management system in addressing the mental health consequences of such events. The program describes the New Jersey Disaster Mental Health System and introduces and is consistent with the Federal Emergency Management (FEMA)-Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) model of community crisis intervention.
Terminal Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this program individuals will; understand the changing trend of disaster events, describe the psychosocial impact of disasters and terrorism and the techniques and strategies for assessing the need for mental health intervention and identify appropriate types of early psychological intervention in the wake of a disaster or terrorist event."– njdrcc.org
