NJ Salsa - Montclair, Wednesdays

NJ Salsa is now offering group classes in Montclair, at the beautiful DiRasa Gallery!

At this location we will offer an intimate experience for our learners, in a setting that is designed for the appreciation, demonstration and application of aesthetics.

We will also be offering other classes such as "Salsa Ladies Styling," "Spinning Techniques in Dance," and "Bachata."

Wednesdays:

7-8pm - Salsa (Level 1) Basics & Fundamentals : The Jazz Room

7-8pm - Salsa (Level 2) Ladies Styling : The Gallery

8-9pm - Salsa (Level 2) Turn-Patterns for Social Dancing : The Gallery

9-10pm - Salsa Social Hour : The Gallery

SALSA (Level 1) - 7pm

Our Salsa (Level 1) program is a series of beginner-friendly classes designed to prepare participants for social dancing.

Participants will gain a foundation by acquiring knowledge and practice in the basics and fundamentals of Salsa dancing. In our Level 1 program, we assume no knowledge of dance from the participants. Additionally, no partner is needed to participate in our program.

Within the NJ Salsa (Level 1) curriculum, there are 18 movements that make up the core material. At the end of the first class, the instructors will offer to share the digital copy of the 18 movements. Internalization of the material from class combined with practice, are instrumental in progression.

SALSA (Level 2) Ladies Styling - 7pm

The Salsa (Level 2) Ladies Styling program develops the feminine expression in Salsa. Participants will learn different techniques to style their dance with special attention to details in hand position, arm movement, body isolation, and flow. This program is taught as a shines class, in front of mirrors, with exercises and patterns that can be applied in solo dancing and in partner dancing, and is designed to build confidence in followers' dancing as it pertains to styling and feminine expression.

SALSA (Level 2) Partnerwork - 8pm

Salsa (Level 2) builds on the fundamentals of Salsa (Level 1) and deepens the foundations of salsa with the goal of social dancing through the practice of “shines” (patterned footwork & body movement), drills (partnered & solo), and partner-work patterns.

This program assumes knowledge of the prerequisites acquired in Salsa (Level 1) and moves much quicker. Although some participants are tapped for this program by an instructor or coach, the most common way to enter Salsa (Level 2) is by qualifying through a scheduled assessment.

Bachata (Level 1) Partnerwork - 8pm

This 4 week Bachata program is a beginner level program for both new dancers, or dancers who are new to Bachata. The curriculum is designed to develop participants for social dancing. As in all of our programs, we use a curated collection of shines (footwork patterns), drills, and partnerwork patterns to build up all of the foundational skills the participant needs to become proficient as social dancers.

SALSA SOCIAL HOUR - 9pm

This time is dedicated to practicing our dance to Salsa & Bachata music, and with the people in both programs. The application of knowledge learned in class is essential for progression. It also gives you an opportunity to build community.

PARKING

There is street parking directly across the street, at the small municiple lot, and there is unmetered parking around the block. No need to feed the meters after 7pm.

What is a "Lead" or "Follow" in the registration process?

When you go to register for classes below, there will be different options. You will choose from either Lead or Follow in the class that you would like to enroll in. For example, if you would like to register for Salsa (Level 1), you will choose between registering as a Lead or Follow.

A "Lead" in social dance is someone who directs the dance.

A "Follow" in social dancing is someone who responds to cues given by the lead, to compliment and complete the synchronicity of the dance.

For those who would like to take two lessons in one week, we're offering a discounted price which includes both the Tuesday Salsa program in Elizabeth, and the Wednesday Salsa program in Montclair.

Tuesday's classes will be at Lobby in Elizabeth, and Wednesday's classes will be at DiRasa House of Diversified Arts in Montclair.
