“To care about stories is to care about the world, and understanding our own, gives us purpose,” states Nitashia Johnson. “For as long as I can remember, storytelling through art has been my way of understanding the world around me—and my place within it.”
“Body & Earth,” a solo-exhibition by Nitashia Johnson, opens Monday, January 13 in the TWU West Gallery. Johnson is a multimedia artist, educator, and storyteller from Dallas, TX. An alumni of TWU Visual Arts & Booker T Washington, she later went on to receive additional advanced degrees from RISD & UTD. Her rich creative education led to their current work as a Digital Media Specialist, as well as freelance work in photography, videography, and graphic design. Yet, she says her purpose remains rooted in a commitment to using art as a tool to inspire, heal, and connect people.
Her freelance photojournalism has allowed her to connect and tell the stories of tomorrow, helping her to grow as an artist with a passion for bonding and change. Over the years, her work has continued to grow and expand into new spaces, photographically exploring and challenging stereotypes surrounding the Black community, by offering a more nuanced, empowering narrative. Documenting the rapid transformation of historical neighborhoods affected by socio-economic shifts, Johnson’s work shines a light on environmental injustices in West Dallas. “Through this work, I aim to preserve the essence of a community in transition, highlighting both its beauty and its challenges.”
Exhibition runs JANUARY 13 – FEBRUARY 7, 2025 in the TWU West Gallery. Please join us THURSDAY: FEBRUARY 6th, from 5:00–7:00pm for a closing reception. Light refreshments will be provided, with brief artist remarks at 6:00pm.
