Nina Simone: Four Women comes to Geva!September 16, 1963. When Nina Simone heard that Carole Robertson, Denise McNair, Cynthia Wesley, and Addie Mae Collins had been killed in the bombing of the 16thStreet Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, she harnessed her rage to write her first Civil Rights song, “Mississippi Goddam”, in honor of Medgar Evers and the four murdered black girls. This song marked the beginning of her shift from being an artist to an artist and activist. It would either launch a new chapter in her career or be catastrophic to it. Infused with traditional hymns from Nina’s youth in the church along with the songs, “Four Women”, “Young, Gifted and Black”, and “Sinnerman,” among others, Nina Simone: Four Women is a piercing examination of this artist and Civil Rights activist as she seeks wholeness on a journey that leads down a path of self-discovery and healing while struggling to be fully seen and heard.
