Intercultural Museum and Theatre Museum invite you to a double lecture with Deise Nunes and Nilu Kamaluddin, as part of the lecture series Decolonize theater history!
NILU KAMALUDDIN "The perimeter of contemporary theatre praxis in India": In this talk, Kamaluddin argues that contemporary urban theatre practice can be seen as a continuation and legacy of the colonial past in the Indian subcontinent. Post-independent India can be understood as a part of a wider notion of colonialist interpellation, which is implanted within the postcolonial structure. It can also be interpreted as internal colonialism, locked in ‘the difference within’. Biculturalism and hybridity are at the core of present-day theatre practices. Lecture held in English.
DEISE NUNES "Re-imagining Fanon – Black Skin, White Masks as theatre performance": In this lecture, Nunes approaches the contents and contexts of the performance Black Skin, White Masks from 2019, based in the seminal work by Frantz Fanon. The production was directed by Fernanda Júlia Onisajé, the first Black woman to occupy the director position in the history of the University of Bahia’s Theatre Company. The dystopian play talks about how the colonization process creates psychological suffering on Black individuals.
