Nikole Hannah-Jones Discusses The 1619 Project

MahoganyBooks and Loyalty Bookstores are proud to partner with the DC Public Library to present Nikole Hannah -Jones in celebration of The 1619 Project. Join us for a powerful, intimate, and much anticipated evening with author, journalist, Pulitzer prize winner and now Howard University professor, Nikole Hannah-Jones, as she discusses The 1619 Project. This work will easily become one of this year's most seminal pieces and one of arguably of this decade. The event will be live and in person as well as streaming. About the Book:

The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together eighteen essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with thirty-six poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance. The essays show how the inheritance of 1619 reaches into every part of contemporary American society, from politics, music, diet, traffic, and citizenship to capitalism, religion, and our democracy itself.

This is a book that speaks directly to our current moment, contextualizing the systems of race and caste within which we operate today. It reveals long-glossed-over truths around our nation’s founding and construction—and the way that the legacy of slavery did not end with emancipation, but continues to shape contemporary American life.

Event Guidelines:

• Paid ticket include a signed copy of The 1619 Project by Nikole Hannah-Jones. The sponsored, free ticket include an unsigned copy. The free tickets have been secured by a benefactor to keep the event accessible to all. Please keep this in mind when selecting your ticket level.
• All persons attending the LIVE event must properly wear a face mask for the duration of the event or risk expulsion from attendance.
• Vaccination cards must be presented to enter the in-person event OR proof of a negative COVID test within three days of the event.
• Doors open at 6pm and the event will begin at 7pm.
• All books must be picked up at the event. No books will be shipped afterward. If you are unable to attend, you must pick up your book at MLK library by Dec 9, 2021 or they will be donated to local organizations. No refunds will be issued.
• Previous orders of The 1619 Project are not admission to this event.
• Loyalty Bookstores and MahoganyBooks have a zero tolerance for in person or virtual harassment of any kind towards staff, fellow attendees, or presenters. Please see your ticket confirmation for further details of the event.
