About this Event

Come join us for an introduction to Nikkei wines – California wines hand-crafted by Japanese American and Japanese in America winemakers and proprietors. Sample very limited, small lot wines from California appellations poured by the Nikkei brand owners who share the common thread of their Japanese heritage and the application of Japanese cultural sensibilities to their craft.

There will be three tasting sessions (10 am-12 pm/12-2 pm/2-4 pm). Please purchase tickets for the time block you'd like to participate.

Byron Kosuge, B. Kosuge Wines, Napa and Sonoma Counties – owner, winemaker, and consultant.

A California sansei from Davis, Kosuge has been a winemaker for well over 30 years specializing in Pinot Noir. Kosuge produces handcrafted wines under his eponymous label and has been a winemaking consultant extraordinaire, currently making wines for Miura, McIntyre, Alder Springs, Small Vines, Kingston Family, and McEvoy Ranch.

Jason Mikami, Mikami Vineyards, Lodi County – owner and grower.

Since 1896, when the first generation emigrated from Japan to California, the Mikami family has produced premium wine grapes in the Lodi appellation. With three generations of grape growing experience, Mikami Vineyards under Jason’s leadership produces single vineyard, hand crafted wines from the premier blocks of the family vineyard estate.

Yasuhisa Hayashi, Paulownia Wines, Napa Valley – owner and winemaker.

Yasu, originally from Okayama, credits legendary mentors including Scott McLeod, Larry Stone, Stephane Derenoncourt, Philippe Bascaules, and Francis Ford Coppola, who have played an important role in Yasu’s viticultural and winemaking journey since starting in the tasting room at Niebaum-Coppola Winery over twenty years ago.

Azumi Kubo, Kampai Wines, Napa Valley – co-owner and chief culture officer

Azumi Kubo and Peter Chiang founded Kampai Wines to produce artisanally crafted wines that express the terroir of some of the best vineyards across Napa and Sonoma in winemaker Steve Matthiasson’s classically balanced style. Kampai Wines’ estate vineyard Meadowbrook Farm is located in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley.

Sonoe Hirabayashi, Six Cloves Wines, Sonoma County – owner and winemaker.

Born in Nagano, Sonoe came to the U.S and completed the UC Davis winemaking program and worked a number of winery stints in Napa, Sonoma, New Zealand, and Chile before returning to Sonoma County to start Six Cloves Wines in pursuit of the joy of expressing her own interpretation of winemaking in California.
