Visible from an aeroplane approaching the airport as well as from the town, the green cross on the top of the hill at Rustavi was the first of its type in Georgia. Maurice Denis', Green Christ Le Christ vert, 1890), acquired by the musée d'Orsay in 2020, subverts the icon by way of a transvaluation of painting. Just like the green cross, the positive function of tge religious image is supplemented, if not transgressed, by an additional and arbitrary content. It is not so much that it is green, but rather that it is a contradiction in the expectation accorded to the image and remains simultaneous with it.
Parallel to the spontaneous temporality of visual experience, Tamar Chaduneli's work in video redirects and subverts it. If as the filmmaker Danièle Huillet would lament, film is not enough concerned with the effect of the wind on the trees, what is produced by this heightened awareness if not resistance ? In this exhibition the volatility of polychromed sculptural surface is accorded the same status as the video image.
James Sturkey's drawings are an excavation remaining as surface. They are corrections suspended over an aggregate of their always potential destruction. Like grafiti on the building they depict, they are both metonymic and arbitrary. The controlled practice is traversed freely by the uncontrolled mutation of the image content.
Harry Chapman's work is concerned with contradiction as a sculptural material. Insofar as this work is premised on its contraints it is both multiple and independent if its specific materiality; chrome vanadium and paper are one and the same.
