Please note: for this one talk only, we’re meeting on the second-last Tuesday of the month — 23rd SeptemberWe hope you enjoyed the summer break and are ready for another exciting year of talks at Shrewsbury's premier Science and Philosophy discussion group.
We’re starting the new season with an absolute banger: our annual contribution from Hmmm Squad stalwart Dr Jonathan Head, who will explore one of the most (in)famous quotes in philosophy from one of its most misconstrued thinkers.
In 1882, Nietzsche published the story of a madman who runs through a marketplace, declaring: “God is dead! God remains dead! And we have killed him!” The crowd first laughs, then falls into disconcerted silence. The madman departs, remarking that the people are not ready to hear his news.
But what does Nietzsche really mean by the “death of God”? How could humanity have killed God—and have we truly done so? Do we still live under the shadow of this pronouncement today? And, perhaps most importantly: was the madman really mad?
Dr. Jonathan Head is Lecturer in Philosophy and Chair of the Philosophy Programme at Keele University. Educated at Oxford and Warwick, he specialises in the history of philosophy and philosophy of religion. His most recent book, Early Modern Philosophy: An Inclusive Introduction (Bloomsbury, 2023), has been widely praised. More importantly for us, his talks probably represent peak Hmmm Squad. Those who joined his last session on whether AI should have rights will recall how he achieved the near-impossible: making difficult philosophical dilemmas accessible without oversimplifying, while sparking real thought and debate.
So please join us for an evening of ideas, questions, and lively discussion.
