Nicola Dickson is known for her alluring paintings that draw inspiration from history and, in particular, European sea voyages and expeditions during the 18th-19th century. For this exhibition, Nicola has studied notes, drawings and engravings documenting the French scientific voyage commanded by Louis de Freycinet from 1817 – 1820. She is fascinated by the voyagers’ deep curiosity and respect for both nature and the peoples that the explorers encountered. Nicola responds to the archival materials through beautifully rendered paintings that capture her thoughtful impressions from a contemporary viewpoint.
