“Nicky Enright: FLAGments & FRACKments”Wed., Oct. 16–Fri., Dec. 13, Freedman Gallery
The exhibition includes works from two series of drawings; each combines the concept of fragments with a second concept: flags and fracking. FRACKments are dreamlike meditations on climate change. Each work is a collage of images based on the artist’s own photographs and previous artworks. Each work is made using basic drawing techniques and materials on multiple sheets of paper. These works explore the fraught relations between humans and other living species on the planet, as well as humans and our relationship to our rapidly changing environment. Fracking is the controversial extraction of oil or gas from underground rock formations at high pressure. The root of the word is Latin: “frac,” meaning “to break,” and is found in fracture, fraction, fractal, fragile, and fragment. These concepts relate to both series, which explore global issues in a fragmented way using basic materials: ink, acrylic, and wax pencil on multiple sheets of paper or canvas. In FLAGments, multiple realities coexist to explore the fraught relationship between many have with flags, partiotism, nationalism, and the targeted scapegoating of xenophobia. Flags are simple geometric abstractions that nonetheless carry an inordinate amount of emotional weight that some are willing to K*ll or die for. FLAGments are reflections on the fragmentation caused by imaginary, often arbitrary lines. Here, the artist is thinking about immigration and the way flags and borders function. Multiple realities coexist in both series, and they both present dreamlike meditations on global issues.
