Nick Walker
Working between his hometown of Bristol and New York City, Nick Walker has become one of the world’s leading stencil masters, known for his flat photographic style that combines elements of realism with the natural aesthetic properties of spray paint.
Embracing both the precision of stencils and the fluidity of spray paint, Walker’s work meshes conventional graffiti with the crisp and duplicative properties of stencil. His cityscapes and characters, like the bowler-wearing Vandal, have become iconic within the art world, as well as on city walls in New York, London, Hong Kong, Paris and beyond.
Walker rose out of the graffiti movement that hit Bristol in the early 1980s, working with freehanded spray paint for years before experimenting with stencils in the 1990s. With a new found love of the accuracy of stencil, he began to hit the streets harder, dressing inconspicuously in order to paint multiple stencils without attracting attention.
The beloved Vandal character has made Walker one of the most recognizable street artists. In 2008. Walker’s career was given a jolt forward, when his Moona Lisa piece sold for ten times its value at Bonhams Auctioneers. He continues to be sought after in galleries, auction houses and commercial projects.
Today, Walker continues to hand cut his stencils, both for the studio and for large-scale wall projects. His work often focuses on inserting characters like the Vandal into complex architectural scenes, while also incorporating an element of humor to address social and political issues.
